Green smoothies are a powerhouse of goodness, a meal in a glass (almost) and really quite simple to make – if you find the time to make them of course! Finding the time is always a struggle in our house, a lot happens in the morning so smoothie making of any kind is a bit hit or miss, or should I say big hit and mess.
The secret I find is making green smoothies on mass. This way you only have a mess to clean up once and a nutritious drink whenever you choose. Pick a few recipes you like and make them one after another on a day you have some time and pop them in your fridge or freezer (save up those jars!). Depending on how long you are keeping them for will of course determine “fridge” or “freezer”. You can pull one out either the night before (if frozen) or in the morning and...Voila – a green smoothie in your hand, just like magic!
I have even taken to removing the stems from the kale in one go, chopping it up and storing it in a container in the fridge, it lasts much longer & is “ready to go” when you are.
This is my favourite green smoothie recipe – it serves four. It will thicken up a little over time because of the chia however I like this though as we often add a little apple juice or water to it when we have it the next time and it tastes quite different.
Green Power Smoothie (makes 4 cups)
3 cups kale (stems removed)
1 green apple (cut in 4 & deseeded)
1 tbls organic chia seeds
1 tbls organic maca powder
1 tsp spirulina
2 celery stalks
1/3 cup blueberries
400ml organic coconut water
Add all the ingredients into a food processor or thermomix and blend until smooth. This one is quite thick so you can add some more liquid if you like.
When I find the time to make and drink a green smoothie, I truly feel better for it, a lot better. A cup full of fresh leafy greens, fruit and some of my favourite superfoods first thing in the morning is such a great way to start the day.
