Organic spelt grain is an ancient cereal grain which has a delicious nutty flavour. Spelt grain is highly nutritious, being naturally high in fibre and protein. It is similar to wheat in appearance, but has a tougher husk than wheat which may help to retain nutrients in spelt. Organic Spelt Grain contains more protein than wheat, and the protein in spelt is easier to digest so wheat-intolerant individuals prefer this.

Spelt grain can be substituted for wheat grain. It is suitable for home milling, sprouting, pilafs and salads. You could also try rolling it so it can be used as porridge.

Organically grown, spelt is processed similarly to wheat grain which involves cutting the heads from the top of the spelt plants and then thresh them to remove the grains from the rest of the head, called chaff. The grains are divided from additional plant fragments, cleaned and separation of bran, endosperm and germ can take place. Unlike wheat, where vital nutritional bran and germ are quite often removed, the vital substances of spelt are in the inner kernel of the grain so it is never lost. It is grown without the use of insecticides or pesticides and harvested and packed without the use of preservatives and additives.
